Go to your local radio shack and ask them for a PSx to USB adaptor. this will allow you to use your old PS1/PS2 controllers on your PS3. if you want to use it as controller 1 hold the PS button on your PS3 controller and goto reassign controller and change it to controller 2. now your PS2 controller should be controller 1. I dunno if this will allow vibration on older PS2 games or not but none the less it will allow for more playes on your PS3 at a fraction of the cost.
http://www.gameasylum.us/play12ps2psx1.html theres one for $15 that actually allows 2 controllers. I dunno if it will work on the PS3 but the ones they usually have at radio shack will/should.

the reason it doesn't work I have concluded is because it doesn't have the analog button that a controller has ( the button in the middle that lights up red and activates the analog sticks). When this is pressed on a regular controller it lets the PS3 know theres a controller there. Since the Guitar doesn't have one you can't use it because the PS3 doesn't know it's there.
