So I took apart an all ready broken 9 volt battery. (the small square ones usually used in smoke detectors). I first took off the bottom then the metal sides and what was left was basically 6 smaller batteries hooked together. well at the top right under the plug things is a piece of cardboard which prevents the batteries from touching in ways there not supposed to. well I took that out and I was holding down the batteries against the top and eveidentlly something was touvhing that shouldn't of been. I noticed the batteries felt like they were getting warm but I figured they were just sucking up heat from my hands. next thing I know pop. one of the smaller batteries blew apart in my hand. blew the center right out. sounded like a 22 fireing. I didn;t get hurt luckily but I think w/ the pressure asserted and the acids involved I could of. My recomendation is not to mess w/ a 9V battery. I immediatly washed my hands. so ya thats my little story.
